An invisible, uncrossable physical barrier encloses the Unified States. The Line is the part of the border that lopped off part of the country, dooming the inhabitants to an unknown fate when the enemy used a banned weapon. It’s said that bizarre creatures and superhumans live on the other side, in Away. Nobody except tough old Ms. Moore would ever live next to the Line.
Nobody but Rachel and her mother, who went to live there after Rachel’s dad died in the last war. It’s a safe, quiet life. Until Rachel finds a mysterious recorded message that can only have come from Away. The voice is asking for help.
Who sent the message? Why is her mother so protective? And to what lengths is Rachel willing to go in order to do what she thinks is right?--Goodreads

This book is too short!! Aaah I want to know so much more. In the beging it was a very calm read. Not boring but just interesting enought to keep you hooked. You get to know Rachel's character and how isolated she is from the rest of society out on The Property. Then the heart of the story starts to unfold as secrets are revealed and friends become foe. The story gets very exciting when time is running out and decisions need to be made within moments.
I don't like to give spoilers but I do want to give you a little run down on what is going on in this book. Let's start with The Line. The Line is a small section of the National Border Defense System. The US Government secretly activated the invisible border (NBDS) to "so call" protect thier citizens from an attack. The Property is located away from the populace, on several acers and borders right on The Line. This gives Rachel and whoever else lives there a perfect view of Away. Away was once part of the US and is now home to the Others. The Others are the people who are trapped on the other side of The Line who have special talents and gifts as result of the bombing. This is all just a snippet of info on each term. There is so much more details in the book which you don't want to miss out on.
We get just a glance of the Others in this story and they are the ones I'm really looking forward to meeting in the next book. The paranormal fascinates me and I can't wait to see what lies ahead for the rest of the series.

Next Book in the Series:
Away -2011

"Oh Rachel." Ms. Moore came to her then and held her. "Don't you see? You can't be brave without being afraid. The brave ones are always afraid. But they do what they must, even so."

Drug-o-meter: None
