Genre: YA Paranormal Romance
The action and romance continue as the Drakes face a new vampire with a 200-year-old grudge. It’s been centuries since Isabeau St. Croix barely survived the French Revolution. Now she’s made her way back to the living and she must face the ultimate test by confronting the evil British lord who left her for dead the day she turned into a vampire. That’s if she can control her affection for Logan Drake, a vampire whose bite is as sweet as the revenge she seeks.
The clans are gathering for Helena’s royal coronation as the next vampire queen, and new alliances are beginning to form now that the old rifts of Lady Natasha’s reign have started to heal. But with a new common enemy, Leander Montmarte—a vicious leader who hopes to force Solange to marry him and usurp the power of the throne for himself—the clans must stand together to preserve the peace he threatens to destroy.
This second adventure in the Drake Chronicles—told from both Logan’s and Isabeau’s perspectives—has all the same butt-kicking action, heart-pounding romances and snarky humor that readers loved in Hearts at Stake, as well as exciting new revelations about the vampire dynasties to keep readers coming back for more.---Goodreads
This book was not exactly what I expected to be next in The Drake Chronicles series but it gave me a little more insight in the Drake family and I’m happy with that. I was a little disappointed that this book wasn’t about Lucy and Nicholas or Solange and Kieran but we do see them in this book a little.
What drew me into this series is how big Alyxandra’s vampire world is with the different types of vampires and the detailed Drake lineage. I like big broad worlds because it means there are many possibilities and the series can go on for a good number of books. I love big series.
OK so let’s talk about the characters. Logan. I liked Logan. He was genuine, very polite, traditionally proper and has the Drake family charm that all the Drake boy’s seem to have. The only thing that bothered me was his pirate clothes. Yes, that is right I said “pirate clothes“. You know..the lacy shirts and trench jackets. Well, it didn’t hamper the story at all but it was hard to imagine. Put then again if Johnny Depp can pull it off I’m pretty sure Logan can. I just prefer my men without lace…anywhere on there body. So anyway, other than that I loved his character and how he connected to Isabeau, the heroine in this story.
Isabeau is not a “normal” vampire but a Hound (The Hounds are a tribe of reclusive, superstitious vampires who live in caves. They call themselves the Cwn Mamau, “The Hounds of the Mother.” They have two sets of fangs, instead of the single set of the Raktapa Council vampires or the entire mouthful of the Hel-Blar. And they follow a Shamanka—their magical leader.--The Drake Chronicle.com). She is a very strong, independent and spiritual character. But most of all she is a survivor. She has been through many horrible situations in her life but had always seems to perseverance. That being said she still has big obstacles to over come and a huge score to settle. I felt that she was a very likable character with her old world manner (she is from the 1700s), dedication to her tribe, and determination to fight for what she believes in.
The connection between these two characters was instant but strained because they are from to different worlds of the same universe. I hope that makes since. What I mean is, yes they are both vampires but they are two totally different vampires. Isabeau is the one with who holds back a little more while Logan seems to accept his attractions to her and let’s his feelings guide him not concerning himself with their differences. I really like that about him.
Over all this book was good, filled with action, and had a good about of romantic tensions to keep your gut tighten and hoping for more. I’m looking forward to read the next book which is not going to be about Lucy and Nicholas or Solange and Kieran but it will be another look into the Drake family through one of the seven brother’s eyes.
Isabeau-"How did you know it wasn't really me?"
Logan-"Are you kidding? Your eyeballs could be on fire and you wouldn't bat your lashes at me like that."
