Blog Tour: My POV of Cicada by Belle Whittington

Published September 13th 2011 by CreateSpace (first published July 14th 2011)
Summertime for Blair Reynolds and her friends had always been carefree and fun...until the summer they happened upon something that was not human. As they band together in a fight for their lives, Blair's true love becomes something more than human. Something unnatural. And their survival depends entirely upon their ability to keep a secret. --Goodreads

I was not expecting such a big story from such a small book. The gorgeous cover deceived me a little because  this 198 page adrenaline pack story was about aliens in a small Texas town near Houston (my home town). I’ve always been terrified of aliens after seeing Fire in the Sky so this book was on the scary side for me but you will not find the book in the Horror section in the bookstore. I would say its more of a YA Thriller with a pocket full of romance.

The five main characters, Blair, Andrew, Everett, David and  Natalie go through some major changes during their summer before leaving to college. This book is written in Blair’s POV and she is one year younger then her brother and friends and while they are all graduating she is moving up to senior status as fall comes around. The summer starts off just the same an any other in their usual meeting spot at the drive in when you get the suspicious feeling that not all is what it seems in this small community. Buildings start to look suspicious, people are acting a little differently, animal are being skittish, crop circles are mysteriously appearing, and the “haunted wood” holds many surprises for this Texas town.

I was kind of sad to see that Andrew never had a girl to call his own but it was pretty obvious from the beginning that he was a caretaker with a purpose. He’s a good ol’ boy.  Well mannered with a good head on his shoulders who take cares of his family. Blair is the youngest and only girl in her family. With Andrew’s twin Aaron and their father not in their lives anymore they have become close as surviving family member usually do. Everett is one of Andrews best friends. He is nerdy, clumsy, awkward but cute. Him and Blair are the closest since Natalie and David are attracted to one another. This is a very close nit group and would do anything to help the other.

The topic of Extraterrestrials really scares me so my heart was beating a mile a minute during most of the book. There was lots of action, mystery and wonder. After getting over my alien aversion it was cool to see where this story was taking me and I was totally hooked. There are still many things left unresolved by the end of the book and I hope the next book comes out soon. I need to know what happens next for everyone.

“They are all leaving me, Daddy," I wiped the tears from my eyes. "I'm going to be here all alone with all these secrets.”
“I don't want to die without telling you that I love you," Everett's voice was a faint, wavering whisper, and his lips swollen and bloodied. "I always have.”
