Halloween Character Booktacular with Amy Kathleen Ryan + GIVEAWAY!

Halloween on the Empyrean
by
Amy Kathleen Ryan

Seth adjusted the dagger sticking out of his chest, and decided he needed more blood coming out of his eye socket. Most of the kids on board the Empyrean were dressing up as cutsie pirates or ballerinas, but cute was never Seth’s style. On his cheek he dribbled a bit of reddish paste he’d made from dried tomatoes, and stood back from the mirror. His skin was greenish gray from the crop-dust he’d patted all over himself, his pants ripped and bloody, and the knife handle he’d rigged to stick out of his shirt was rusty and lethal looking. When he smiled, his teeth were cruddy with muddy black licorice. Yep. He looked dead. He had a feeling Waverly would like it.
When he walked down the corridor toward the party, several adult crewmembers turned to look at him. Mrs. Holloway gave a start when she nearly bumped into him around a corner, and she frowned disapprovingly at him.
“It’s Halloween!” he said, and laughed as she scurried off, looking disturbed. Some people had no sense of the macabre.
The party was already swarming with kids by the time he got there. Someone had set up an apple-dunking barrel in the corner and kids were lining up to stick their heads into a bunch of stale water and saliva. No thank you. Seth headed for the punch bowl and, from his hip pocket, pulled a tiny flask. With a quick glance around he upended the flask, and the spirits he’d pilfered from his father ran into the punch in a fragrant stream.
“There’s little kids here,” someone said from behind him.
Seth whirled. Kieran Alden stood there wearing an absolutely ridiculous hat with an outsized turkey feather sticking out of it. Seth let his eyes trail down and laughed when he saw Kieran was wearing tights. “Dude.”
“I’m Henry the Eighth,” Kieran said with feigned dignity.
Seth looked through the crowd for Waverly, and he spotted her wearing a beautiful green velvet gown with a laced bodice. Her hair was swept up from her long neck in a gracious swath of mahogany, and when she saw him looking at her, she smiled and came over.
“Anne Boleyn, I presume?” Seth said with a bow.
“And what are you?” she asked, a twinkle of humor in her large brown eyes.
            “Random murder victim.”
            “Scary,” she said.
            Kieran watched this exchange uneasily.
“You know Anne, Henry is going to behead you later,” Seth said to Waverly, ignoring Kieran’s disapproving scowl.
She laughed. “For the sin of adultery.”
“What’s that mean?” Seth asked with a teasing glance at Kieran. “She cheated on him, right? With some bad boy?”
“She didn’t do it,” Kieran said testily. “Henry lied because he thought she was barren. He needed an excuse to get her out of the way.”
“Oh, well, that’s much better,” Seth said with an evil grin. The music started up – a love song with lots of violins. “Want to dance later?” Seth asked Waverly.
Kieran led her away before she could answer, leaving Seth to watch as the two of them spun in a slow circle on the dance floor, Kieran’s hands on her tiny waist, her thin arms draped over Kieran’s shoulders. She laid her head down, nuzzling against Kieran’s neck. She looked happy.
With a grim sigh, Seth served himself a cup of the punch, and went to go sit in the corner, alone.
