Halloween Character Booktacular with Victoria Scott

Expected publication: March 12th 2013 by Entangled Teen

I spot her from across the crowded room, standing in the corner. Her nervous hands flutter over her white dress. Perfect.
All around, people spin in dizzying circles, dancing to the hypnotic music, dressed like they are me—like they are demons. Costume parties bore me to tears, and this one isn’t any different. Orange and black streamers crisscross the basement ceiling, and a bowl of orange spiked punch sits on a busted-ass table near the back wall. This Halloween crap couldn’t be any more lame if the Jonas Brothers showed up and rocked out.
But the girl—she has my attention.
I may be hell’s number one collector, but Boss Man wants more souls, more. And my numbers have slipped. I’m off my game. So I’ve got to find a different way to meet quota.
All these people, all these drunk, sinful people—I’ll seal their souls for hell. But I need something else. I can’t just target the easy ones anymore. No, I’ve got to seek out humans who wouldn’t otherwise sin.
Humans like the brunette in the white dress.
I shove my red, plastic cup into the hand of a passerby. The dude slaps me on the back in thanks and runs crotch-first after a blond chick. Across the room, the girl in white meets my gaze. A small smile parts her mouth and a rush of excitement shimmies up my spine. She’s such a sweet girl, so pure. Her big brown eyes look like two aged pennies in her heart-shaped face, and her lips are painted red. I can imagine her hours earlier, standing before her mirror.
Should I wear red lipstick? She tilts her head at her reflection, inspecting the swell of her mouth. I think I will. It’s Halloween.
The girl straightens as I move closer but our eyes stay locked. In the darkened room, the strobe light flickering, she looks like an angel—or maybe a ghost.
Her hand moves to her collarbone and in that simple gesture, I see that she is afraid. Afraid of what she’ll say, of whether she’ll stumble over her words. The innocence rolling off her fills my nose. It causes an animalistic ache in my throat. I want her soul. I can almost taste the honey-sweetness of it on my tongue.
All I have to do is guide her into a black ocean of sin, to show her how good it feels to abandon virtue. As I move nearer, she breathes in and she bites her crimson lip and I see it—a willingness. A want so bad it thickens the air.
Her soul is practically clamoring to escape her body and I’d like nothing more than to take it.
I step close to her. So close she has to move backward until her shoulder blades hit the wall and the expanse of my body swallows hers. My eyes travel over her frame, memorizing the way she moves, the way her chest rises and falls.
I bring my hand to her cheek and tuck a stray lock of hair behind her ear.
“Name’s Dante,” I say. “Want to have some fun?”
