AAD Author Spotlight: Cat Johnson

Cat Johnson

 One Sweet Ride…

Oh yeah. A single look at the leggy blonde in the stands and Tucker Jenkins is ready to buck all night long. It’s time to forget all about his cheating ex and his usual hands off policy.

One Hot Night…

Becca Hart is an East Coast professor. Not a buckle bunny. But no degree can prepare her for the moves of the sexy bull rider she hooks up with at her first rodeo … Or the shock of finding him at her first Oklahoma State University staff meeting.

One Happy Ending…

Tuck knows it’s all about holding on, no matter how wild the ride. Now he just has to convince Becca that a rough start out of the chute doesn’t mean they aren’t a smokin’ combination …

(Oklahoma Nights, Book 1) by Cat Johnson

1) Go, OSU Cowboys!
One Night with a Cowboy is set at Oklahoma State University. Why? I knew a few students there and knew I could pick their brains. They supplied everything from insider info about rodeo team practice, to details about the mascot, Pistol Pete.

2) Cowboy vs Combat Boots—why choose?
The editor at Kensington had asked if I'd submit a proposal for a book with either a cowboy or a military hero. To cover all the bases, I decided to make the hero, Tucker, both a cowboy and a soldier.

3) Believe it or not, bologna is sexy.
I wanted my characters to have a date at a restaurant near Stillwater. While researching the menu of Joseph's Fine Foods in Drumright, OK, I read about their fried bologna sandwich. I joked on Twitter with the owners that I didn't know if even I could make that sound sexy. That exchange resulted in a challenge, and ultimately, the now infamous fried bologna sandwich sex scene. That scene spurred my Keep Calm and Eat Bologna joint-marketing campaign with Joseph's. Cross marketing a restaurant's smoked bologna and my steamy romance novels—how's that for creative thinking! 4) Book covers are like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get.
The cover for One Night with a Cowboy is hot! And *phew* was I thrilled and relieved, because the first time I ever saw it was in New Orleans at a convention on the screen of the iPhone belonging to one of the salespeople who works for the publisher. She had a jpg from the catalog featuring future releases that goes to booksellers. Sometimes authors have input on covers, sometimes they don't.

5) A book by any other name…
The title for Book 1 was chosen right away, but Book 2 went through 3 titles before we finally settled on one. First was Two Dates to a Wedding. Next was Two Shots with a Soldier. Finally, was Two Times as Hot, and this is the one we went with. Book 3 wasn't as difficult. I suggested Three Weeks with a Bull Rider and, so far, it stuck. Fingers crossed!
