My POV: The Farm by Emily McKay

The Farm (The Farm, #1)
Paperback, 420 pages
Published December 4th 2012 by Berkley Trade
Life was different in the Before: before vampires began devouring humans in a swarm across America; before the surviving young people were rounded up and quarantined. These days, we know what those quarantines are—holding pens where human blood is turned into more food for the undead monsters, known as Ticks. Surrounded by electrical fences, most kids try to survive the Farms by turning on each other…

And when trust is a thing of the past, escape is nearly impossible.

Lily and her twin sister Mel have a plan. Though Mel can barely communicate, her autism helps her notice things no one else notices—like the portion of electrical fence that gets turned off every night. Getting across won’t be easy, but as Lily gathers what they need to escape, a familiar face appears out of nowhere, offering to help…

Carter was a schoolmate of Lily’s in the Before. Managing to evade capture until now, he has valuable knowledge of the outside world. But like everyone on the Farm, Carter has his own agenda, and he knows that behind the Ticks is an even more dangerous threat to the human race...--Goodreads

My POV

Ever have a book that sneaks up on you from right field and punches you right in the gut??!! You pick it up because the cover is arresting, you read the synopsis, it looks interesting and the price is right so you decide to give it a try. You get home and take care of the chores and the family and after all your endless duties are done, you sit down to read. Then before you know it, it is 4:00 am, you’ve finished, but you are clamoring for more!!?? Can you feel me? That’s how I was affected by The Farm. I was not only drawn to this story, but I was absorbed, mesmerized, hypnotized, all of the above! I really loved Lily and Mel. I must admit that Mel had the least amount of dialogue, etc, but she literally stole the book away from the other characters. The chapters that are from Mel’s point of view are amazing. She’s autistic, so getting inside her mind is a trip! Lily is brave, gutsy and fearless. She will do anything and I mean ANYTHING to protect her twin. Now, let’s talk about the book’s resident hottie, Carter. Carter is the freaking bomb; I don’t know any other way to describe him! The lengths he will go to, to protect Lily are boundless and downright sexy. He will, lie, cheat and even kill to protect her and Mel. Ms. McKay has a way of writing characters, even secondary ones, which the reader really cares about and a story line that is fast paced, action packed and entirely soul wrenching!!! The only thing that saved my sanity (at 4:00 am when I finished the story) was the knowledge that book 2 was coming in the near future. Needless to say,  I will be anxiously awaiting the sequel, The Lair. Hurry up November!!

Quote

“Lily, you have to trust me. I can protect you, but first I have to take you to the Dean’s office.”
I stumbled back a step, pulling Mel with me. “Screw you, Carter.” I pointed an accusing finger at him, my voice rising louder than it should. “I’m not letting you take Mel to the Dean’s office.”
“Lil, I have to-“
He reached out a hand, but I danced out of his grasp.
“You want to take me to the Dean’s office, you’re going to have to tranq me first.”
Then, clenching Mel’s hand in mine, I turned and walked into the darkness. Carter might be a Collab, but one thing I knew about him for sure ---he would never shoot someone in the back.
But then he did.

“I wasn’t anywhere near Mel for two years and I still wanted you. What I feel for you isn’t going to go away.”
“You don’t know that.”
“Yeah, I do.” He gave my knee a squeeze. “Don’t worry. I can wait. I’ve got all the time in the world.”
I knew that tone of voice from him. He wasn’t going to back down. I was to tired to argue with him and too beaten to shove aside that last little bit of hope, so I didn’t say anything.

Author
Emily McKay

Emily McKay has been reading romance novels since she was eleven years old. Her first Harlequin Romance came free in a box of Hefty garbage bags. She immediately fell in love with the genre and has been devouring them ever since.

In her spare time, she loves to garden and cook … well, bake. Mostly cookies. Naturally, she still loves to read a good romance. She’s been blissfully married for eleven years. When they can ditch their five pets for a couple of weeks, she and her husband like to travel to exotic and exciting locations like Greece, Costa Rica, and Ignorant Flats, Texas.

She has a degree in English from Texas A&M University. After college, she taught middle school for four years. While teaching America’s disenfranchised youth to appreciate fine literature, she learned very little about writing romance but a lot about finding humor in any situation. Eager for a job where she wouldn’t have to dodge spitwads, she fled the teaching profession to write full-time. Though her characters sometimes misbehave, they almost never throw things at her.
