BLOG TOUR: The Vertical City ~ PHOENIX by Elizabeth Richards + GIVEAWAY

THE VERTICAL CITY

The Bastets live in the ancient city of Viridis (AKA ‘The Vertical City’)—a sprawling favela that’s been carved into the side of a towering cliff face. When I saw this image of Masouleh (a village in the Gilan province in Iran), I immediately thought of Viridis, and could picture Elijah and his brothers leaping about the rooftops and getting into all sorts of trouble. I absolutely love how the buildings seem to organically grow out of the earth, and the way the rooftops are also the streets.

EXCERPT
“Land ahoy!” he calls down to us.
We quickly dress and hurry up to the deck. It’s a beautiful day: sunny but not too hot, with clear blue skies and a fresh floral perfume in the air. The boat sails past a sheer cliff face hundreds of feet high and covered in twisting vines and lush green foliage. Colorful birds fly overhead, calling out to each other in beautiful song. The foliage starts to thin out as we approach Viridis—the “Vertical City”.
“Oh!” I say, amazed, as Elijah slows the steamboat so we can get a better look.
Built into the cliff face is a sprawling city, which reminds me of the famous favelas in the Southern States. The hundreds of blocky, rose-hued buildings with flat roofs are packed so closely together, it’s impossible to tell where one house ends and another begins—they all appear to be the part of the same organic structure. Crumbling stone steps zigzag through the favela, toward the main city at the top of the cliff. What really takes my breath away is the waterfall that cascades down the middle of the city, spraying clouds of mist into the air.
“Pretty impressive, huh?” he says, smiling.

  15. GAH, I have been wanting to read BLACK CITY since well before it came out...and I STILL haven't had a chance to! I've heard such great things!! However, even though I haven't read it, I've really enjoyed following the blog tour this week and seeing the images that serve as inspiration for places in the series. They have all been so amazing!! I do so much reading that I sometimes forget how much visual cues can inspire us as well. Maybe I would find that I wasn't so bloody terrible at creative writing if I started with images instead of trying to create from whole cloth?!?! Of course it's been years and years since I even tried any creative writing....who knows what I could've done if we'd had PINTEREST in the dark ages of my high school and college years?! Why couldn't Al Gore have gotten started on the whole Interwebs thing just a few years sooner?!?! ;-) Thanks for being part of the tour!
