First in a series.

After a virus claimed nearly the entire global population, the world changed. The United States splintered into fifty walled cities where the surviving citizens clustered to start over. The Company, which ended the plague by bringing a life-saving vaccine back from the future, controls everything. They ration the scant food and supplies through a lottery system, mandate daily doses of virus suppressant, and even monitor future timelines to stop crimes before they can be committed.

Brilliant but autistic, sixteen-year-old Clover Donovan has always dreamed of studying at the Waverly-Stead Academy. Her brother and caretaker, West, has done everything in his power to make her dream a reality. But Clover’s refusal to part with her beloved service dog denies her entry into the school. Instead, she is drafted into the Time Mariners, a team of Company operatives who travel through time to gather news about the future.

When one of Clover’s missions reveals that West’s life is in danger, the Donovans are shattered. To change West’s fate, they’ll have to take on the mysterious Company. But as its secrets are revealed, they realize that the Company’s rule may not be as benevolent as it seems. In saving her brother, Clover will face a more powerful force than she ever imagined and will team up with a band of fellow misfits and outsiders to incite a revolution that will change their destinies forever.

Read the first two chapters on Goodreads:

Shaunta Grimes has put a fresh twist on Dystopia. A Dystopia that has a country dependent on a viral suppressant, time travel is used to keep order, and the human populations at the brink of extinction.

At the beginning of this story when the main characters are just babies we get a very emotional view of what life was like when the virus was at its worst and how they survived. Then the story jumps to 16 years later as the world as the characters know it has changed for the “better”. Since the only life they have ever known is constructed and controlled by the Company, West and Clover have no idea that with the everyday mandatory does of the viral suppressant, monitored lives, and controlled food distribution they have lost what America has always fought and stood for. Freedom.

The superiors say every job is important from the pickers to the guards to the Mariners. Everyone is important. But in the scheme of this story some people are perfectly made for their jobs or I should say that some jobs are perfect for certain people. Either way Clover is someone special. She not only aced her exams and impressed the Company but it just so happen that she is exactly what they look for when choosing a Time Mariner.

Like all epic tales not everything is what it seems and once the characters realize what is really going on they are shocked to the core. As more and more untruths are discovered the band of misfits feel that the only way to save themselves and others is to start a revolutions they never intended to start.
Intense, powerful, heart pounding…story telling at is greatest!
